ME (engine) control unit (computer)
It used to be (way back in the early-mid 90's) that when your LH controller went bad you could pick a used unit, pop it in to your benz/porsche/audi/etc and be up and running again in no time. Apparently, since MB introduced the '97+ SL and switched from the Bosch LH controller to the ME controller, you can't just swap controllers anymore:
With the introduction of the ME engine control unit, Benz is programming each ME to the VIN number of the car in to which it is installed. You would think that you would be able to take a used ME controller in to your local dealer and have them reprogram it... but nope, the programming software will not allow the tech to change the VIN programming! According to Mercedes Benz this prevents parts from stolen cars from being sold and used in repairs. The truth is, this practice prevents Benz owners from buying used parts to repair a used car. Instead, owners have no choice but to pay the list price of over $2,000 for an engine controller - from Mercedes Benz. If, like me, you find this policy and procedure objectionable, please contact Mercedes and let them know how you feel.
