My 1978 450SLC has 140,000 miles but has been well maintained. I parked it in the garage one evening and the next day it would not start. The engine turns-over fast and may even run very roughly for several seconds, but it will not run normally. The ignition coil, distributer cap, rotor and wires are new. The spark is very strong and in time. Compression is 125psi on all cylinders. I have replaced the fuel accumulator and filter recently. Injecting starting fluid does not cause the engine to start. When the crank is at TDC, the left cam timing mark is aligned prefectly and the right cam timing mark is retarded about 3/32 inch. I have compression, fuel, and spark, but the darn thing just won't run - HELP!

Get someone crank the engine while you spray some 'spray start' into the intake manifold. You will have to open the butterfly valve while you spray. If the car starts and runs well while you spray the trouble is probably in your fuel system. It can be anything from a plugged fuel filter to a bad fuel distribution valve. Check that all your vacuum lines are in place. There are others on this board that know way more about 450s than I do and could probably give you much better advice, but i would start with the 'spray start'. That will eliminate the electrical system for a start.

Are you sure that you're getting fuel as in crack a line on the FD and see if you get a dribble? Fuel pump relay or fuse?
If you have fuel and spark at the plugs, then maybe the cold start valve is bad, or ignition timing 'way out - hard to imagine. What do the plugs look like? Wet or dry after cranking?

I am the PROUD owner of a 1978 450SLC and have kept it in pristine condition...Being that I come from a line of automotive "nuts" I am attempting to replace my pump relay, but after numerous calls to MBZ technical they can't tell me EXACTLY where it is ...NOT FUNNY. I need to replace it and have the part but can't locat it's socket!

FUEL PUMP RELAY
Vegasgolf,,
If your relay looks like the one in the pic, it is located behind the glove box. You have to remove the box and the lining.
