Welded muffler

Exhaust pipes that feed into rear muffler are rusting out. Previous owner welded (vs. clamped) rear muffler to center muffler pipes. Therefore, I've been told I must replace center AND rear muffler.
Is this sound advice? (excuse the pun...)
Any way to salvage center muffler? DIY job for a novice?
Ideas?
Thanks to all.

You Can Do It

You can cut the welded pipes off in front of the center muffler and remove every thing to the rear in one piece and then take your time cutting out the welded pipes from the mufflers and get 2 pipes bent at a muffler shop...yes you can do it...

All the MBs I've been under have completely welded exhaust systems. I just replaced the 2 pipes that go from the first muffler to the second one on my 450 slc. A local shop did it for me for $45.
Check out the rubber hangers to make sure they will last another season.

Thanks for the replies.
The pipe is rusted out where it meets the rear muffler. I'm told I should replace everything. I've searched some online catalogs. They show most as being clamped on.
Are you saying I could just have another pipe(s) welded in to adjoin existing rear muffler and center muffler?

you can weld new pipe on to any muffler provided the muffler itself is not rusted.can be a bit tricky but most mercedes mufflers have a reinforced ridge with extrs thick metal you can weld to
