Small cheap diesel generator wanted

Hurricane Ivan is coming, we are leaving for a couple days. Would drive to pick up a generator within range of Mobile, AL. All of the power company crews are in Florida repairing the damage from Charley and Frances. They say we will wait weeks for them to restore power in Alabama after Ivan.

Self Exclusive: small/CHEAP diesel genset

I do not believe such an animal exists.

Do a "google" Balmar (west coast) and ask them. [switchboard.com]

Crazy idea

An inverter from D.C. to A.C. on the "benz" will give you a little emergency
power (plugs into cigarette lighter) : BUT pre-ignition diesels do not like to
"idle" for long peroids of time ... carboning of prechambers and cylinders.

This is about what I have in mind although the one in the auction looks rough, scary.

So far it is just a little windy with drizzles and an occasional rain. About time to go.

"Rough" ?

I have absolutely no reference for the Pricing of used Onans.

It's the "professional" wiring harness for the power transfer that impresses.

I'd have to know how many hours it's been run ( if the engine hr. mtr. works)

AND I'd have to run a compression test .

Where this is located every hour they don't sell , with current conditions
makes it seem more and more valuable.

We were very lucky and received minimal damage. Spent one night in Jackson, MS and returned home the next day. Power was out for less than 24 hours. I will keep my eyes out for a generator and learn more about them.

TK,

Check out construction equipment rental places. They often have old light plants. These are usually about 9kw Diesel units that have reached their payoff age and are put up for sale. They are on trailers, have a built in fuel tank, and the proper governor. All you would have to add is the cable to plug it into your house and a disconnect switch at your breaker box.

It has been my experience that when a rental place sells off some previously rented equipment its about had it in the usefullness department. But you never know you may get lucky I would buy a lottery ticket instead.
