Any interest in an 85 TD engine and other parts..
I have made the decision to part out my 85TD (in the Boston area), or sell as a parts car, because the body rot (among other things) has finally gotten the best of me, and I will be getting a mint 84TDT wagon that I can't pass up. The engine has 330,000 miles on it, but it had a valve job done in 2002 at 260,000 mi., and just last year (October, @316,000) I put in a new turbo cartridge in it.
I can provide details later on the valve job, but it was NOT a hack job...I removed and re-installed head myself (all new head bolts), and valve work was done at Circle Performance in Brockton, MA, head planed, etc. etc., and cost me about $1,000. All new valves, seals, springs, etc etc. Now the engine runs beautifully, although it does jump a little at idle (likely due to injector pump out of calibration). Also, I replaced the timing chain at 160,000 mi. This car runs real clean (smoke only at start up), and will go 95 mph on the highway with no problem. I don't know what the compression is in each cylinder, as I have'nt measured it since the valve job, but I am sure all cylinders are well above 300 psi. I can test for you. I have always done regular oil changes, and have kept complete records on this car. Also, I did the diesel-purge routine every year. Also, I added 2-stroke oil to fuel with every fill up. So anyway, the engine will not be available for another month or so, and I want to see if there is any interest. Although this is a high milage engine, I expect it has a lot of life left, and it has real value due to valve job and turbo work. If someone has a car with a great body but in need of an engine, this may meet your needs. The engine has good injectors (not new) and new glow plugs (last year) The car is currently my daily driver, and I put lots of highway mileage on it (200,000 miles since I bought the car in 1996). Just last week I drove it from Boston to Philidelphia....on the way down in the rain, I got 29 miles per gallon (average speed of 70 mph). On the way back in dry weather, 70-75 mph, 27 mpg. I will be taking some parts from this car to put into the new one. This car has lots of rust (front shroud below bumper, all doors, rear wells, hole through rear floor well, and worst of all, rusted through the structural unibody at front passenger foot well) therefore, I decided to part it or sell as is. I will keep the car driveable so it can be driven some distance. It also has a stainless steel exhaust system which I cant use on the wagon, so it will also be on the car. Also, all new coolant rubber hoses will stay with the car. I will be taking some things off the car...AC condenser, hoses, etc., push button climate control unit, and some other things. I wont be asking a lot for it...my real intent is to make this available for someone who would like it. Let me know if you are interested... Thanks, mark
