Selling parts for profit or to help your fellow MB junkie?

I have always seen this forum as a way for us MB’ers to help each other out, not make a big fat profit. When ever I list parts here I try to give a reasonable price, usually one that is enough to break even, or maybe make a small amount of money to support my MB habit. I would like to thank those who do the same and tell the price gougers to take it to ebay.

What bugs me is when people provide an Ebay link on this parts forum to advertise their goods for sale on Ebay. It should be against the rules.

Why does that bug you and why should it be against the rules. There is a link below offering any 129 owners access to some really good used 129 parts. I have been finding ebay so competetive that anything you buy is a goods deal by default except for the stuff that is in poor condition.

I always want to get a fair price for my stuff. Some things are just not worth much and so I sell them at market value to help folks out more than really doing something that is worth while money wise.

And making the garage less full wins brownie points with the mrs.

It does not make sense to keep stuff until I die and my kids or wife has to call somebody who would take them to the dump and nobody gets any use out of them!

Kinda for the reasons the original poster of this thread stated below..

Post it for sale here first with a fair price and give us forum members an opportunity to buy without competing against the entire world. Isn't that the reason why a parts classified section is included on MBshop? If it doesn't sell here then list on Ebay.

It should be against the rules for similar reasons why dealers aren't allowed to advertise their cars for sale here. This forum should not be used to promote outside sales.

That' just my take on it. Do as you wish.

I have spare parts, quite literally tons of them. That's me. Ocassionally I sell some. Income from parts sales will never equal what I spend on getting the cars the parts came from.

On the other hand, a good buddy of mine sells parts so that he can eat and pay the phone bill. He'll take what he can get.

As the sticky up top says, "buyer beware". The buyer has the right to not make a deal. An uniformed buyer might well get ripped off. But that's what the forum is all about; having a place for a buyer to ask questions and for the rest of us to help with answer.

technically this post doesn't belong in this forum; sounds like you should take it to open discussion, but i'll bite. speaking for myself, as a person who sells parts for a profit, it really kills me to think about how much time and effort it takes to find cars, gas up the rollback at $3.80/gal, go get the cars, answer parts requests, remove the parts (on the hope that they will actually be purchased and paid for), supply pictures, package the parts properly for shipping, take them to the drop point, wait in line, etc... and for what? to break even or lose money? why would anyone do that?
i think there is a big difference between stock piling parts and having to have a fire sale when the misses goes on the warpath and providing a legitimate service to the community of folks trying to keep their cars on the road.

This forum (all of it, not just the parts section) is for help, not for your own personal parts sales business. Use your own website and bandwith if that's what you are doing. The only person who has the right to advertise their parts business here is Phil, he pays the bills.

If I'm headed to the junk yard and I see somebody needs something I'll grab it for them and sell it to them for what the yard charges me and shipping. I've given more parts than I've sold to members in need on this forum, but that's just my philosophy.

i guess it depends on what you call help. if you removed all the threads from the folks who part out many cars (i'm assuming for profit) i doubt that enough parts would be available for everyone who needed them despite the presence of this noble, philanthropic attitude; then many of those who need parts would be forced to look elsewhere which would reduce the overall efficacy of the help available on this site.
