looks like to me
It looks like the oil filter it has a oil filter cartage inside.

That looks like the windshield washer fluid cannister which is on the side of the engine near the oil filter. At least on my 87 300d it is. The coolant overflow is near the air filter on the other side

I'm not that familiar with your engine, but is it not the fitting for the heater return line?
