looks like to me

It looks like the oil filter it has a oil filter cartage inside.

Car: 1987 300DT W124

That sucks. that tube and the one by the turbo always get pitted and corroded. The one by the turbo is NLA, MB recommends you make one.

Go ask the dealer for it...its probably under the heating and ventillation part of the EPC, group 88, 130 the diagram is misleading, but a good parts guy should be able to find it for you.

That looks like the windshield washer fluid cannister which is on the side of the engine near the oil filter. At least on my 87 300d it is. The coolant overflow is near the air filter on the other side

I'm not that familiar with your engine, but is it not the fitting for the heater return line?
