WTB: late-model W123 bumper strut
All;
Looking for a right rear bumper absorber strut (mounts between the bumper and the rear body). Believe that they are all the same, but if not, need it for a 1985 300TD. Thanks in advance, Dave Stack |

LutzTD;
Don't believe they were glued on from the factory, however a PO may have done so... On my '85, the bumper struts have a molded on urethane 'foot'/pad which is a firm press fit into aluminum flanges/brackets on the inside of the bumper. They are removed from the flanges/brackets by driving the struts toward the center. Strictly a friction/interference fit, no adhesive needed. On many bumpers the aluminum flange/bracket is prone to corroding away, and owners come up with other ways to secure the struts to the bumper shell (e.g nut and bolt, glue...). I too suffered the corroded flanges, but had new ones welded on. r/ Dave Stack |

ok, I have them if you want them. send me a PM with your address and I will pull them off tonight. On my previous car the strut came loose. I guess it is the pad is also glued on in the press fit not the strut itself. The ones I have are from my 82 but I cant imagine they are dfferent than 85 on a side note, if you had your bumper welded does that mean for sure it is aluminum? I have been trying to find out if I can get aluminum value for these rather than the $5 core from the yard

Bumper construction
LutzTD;
The rear bumper of my 85 300TD appears to be of 'hybrid' construction. My understanding is that the outer bumper shell is steel, and then there is an aluminum plate which runs the full length of the bumper, which is welded to the inner surface. It is this inner plate which had the mounting flanges incorporated, into which the bumper struts were a press fit. r/ Dave P.S. PM Sent... |
