R129 Front ATE Brake Calipers Upgrade Sl500 for W124 W201

I got a pair of Front Calipers made by ATE for R129 chassis. Removed from 1996 Sl500 with under 80K miles. Will bolt onto 190E and W124 models. Good shape.

More powerful than the E420/400E brakes. Not sure how these compare with the Brembo R129 brakes. However keep in mind that the brakes were removed from a car producing around 320 hp and weighing ~4800 lbs. Any 190E or W124 ( 260E 300E 400E ) would have some serious stopping power with these installed.

Price is 350 shipped.

"Early 500Es (up to VIN B930494) and apparently even some early R129 SLs were equipped with 300mm x 28mm rotors and Brembo calipers. The calipers are the same as used on the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. They are 4-piston, aluminum, painted gloss black with the Mercedes star painted in white on the outside.

Later 500E/E500s (after VIN B930495) were equipped with 320mm x 30mm rotors and cast iron ATE 4-piston calipers. The same calipers and rotos as found on the R129 SLs.

Because aliuminum calipers tend not to be as rigid as cast iron calipers, under certain conditions resonance will occur in the Brembos. As a result, many Brembo equipped 500E owners complained to Mercedes-Benz and the front brakes were upgraded to the cast iron calipers

Do I need R129 spindles to mount these on my 190E?

dwayneseah 10-27-2008 12:12 PM

No, the calipers bolt onto the 190E spindle. R129/W201/W124 share the same spindle. However, you may need bigger wheels to clear these calipers since they are larger than the normal 190E calipers. Are you on stock wheels?

The 190 wheels were opened up inside in '87 for better brake clearance, don't know if that helps.

You'll need 16-inch wheels to clear the rotor & caliper assembly. Also, you will need a wheel with a lot of back-spacing as these calipers are fairly wide.

Last, don't forget a 16-inch spare with the proper back-spacing as well.

Good luck.

I have them on my W124 E36T AMG wagon, and they are wonderful!
