We need a 1991 350 SDL engine (used in good condition) to replace one that has a bad rod bearing, etc.

I have alot of experience in this unfortunately. My advise, you have a used one...A new in the crate COMPLETE engine assy is about $7500 from Mercedes. It comes with a new tensioner, alt, water pump and even the belt. Go this route unless you want to be here again in a year.

In your opinion, do you find that when you spend the $7,500 on the new 3.5 liter diesel MB "crate motor" that it is any better than the original 3.5 liter deisels were?

There are rumors, that MB "fixed" the design flaws in this motor by the end of it's run. Then again, there are rumors that any of the OM603 engines of 3.5 liter displacement are problems waiting to occur.

They are fine as long as you disconnect the EGR. Just put a BB inside the line. The hot gas cooks the oil that is leaked out of the front of the turbo, then that hard ball of carbon gets eaten by the engine and the piston hits the top of the head and the rest is history. The head is much better on the later engine./
