I read that there isn't a difference between the bumpers at all. The difference is in the door cladding.

I don't think their is any difference in the bumpers... The Lower Trim all the way down both sides of the 126 was changed for the 86 thru 91 models.. It went from the finger grove trim to the smooth trim.. Jim

Totally incorrect. There are actually lots of differences. Starting with the "width" of the bumpers. Gen1 are narrower by about 1/2 an inch than gen2. The chrome is different as well. Gen1 with washer nozzles had the sprayers in the chrome, not so in gen2. Gen2 rear bumpers come down lower along the sides, hiding the exhaust and spare tire housing better than the gen1 bumpers. If you have them side by side the differences are quite obvious, harder if you don't look at them together though. There are some good posts on BenzWorld that even show pics of cars with the different bumpers and you can really notice the differences. Gen2 is also much harder to find, as fewer were imported into this country than gen1, and therefore command a higher price.

well then that would explain why the euro bumper I have wont fit without modifying the mounting holes on the car.

99.9% of the Euro bumpers in the US are the old style Gen I's. They're pretty much dime-a-dozen if you look around. Finding the Gen II's on the other hand is whats VERY HARD and very expensive. I spent nearly 3 years or so looking before I pieced together my set. Didn't come cheap either....


For those that do not know the difference between the 2 bumpers... have a look:



The Gen II Euro bumpers have a cut out for a Euro license plate thats located below the top of the bumper. The Gen I's are located at the top of the bumper. The Gen I bumpers are much smaller.. and look very old school compared to the face-lift more-modern looking Gen II's.

You can fit Gen I's on Gen II's and vice-versa... but fitting Euro bumpers on an US car will require you to cut off the horizontal "O-ring" off the tow hook to be able to fit the tow hook cover on properly.

TheDon... take a picture of your Euro bumper.. I'd be curious why your bumper doesn't fit.

well after trying to get it to fit for about 20 minutes it boiled down to having to cut the tow hook to make it fit correctly and widen the mounting holes so it will fit. The studs on the bumper are off on one side by about 1/4" or so

Just a note for the archives... Gen1 and Gen2 US bumpers are the same.

I always thought it was odd the euro 2.5 mph bumper wasn't fitted in the 86 refresh as 10 mph bumpers weren't required anymore.
