Consider this instead.
I will pass this information along in an effort to be helpful.
If you are not concerned about originality so much as functionality, then you may wish to consider the aftermarket options: Official Audiovox CCS-199 install thread Or the better option: Rostra Aftermarket Cruise Control The wiring Diagram The Rostra Cruise Control install I was steered this direction, and the honest truth is that the MB tempomat for our cars is problematic. With either of these systems, you have the advantage of a more modern control system, vacuum-free options and you can integrate the MB tempomat stalk into the system to at least make it 'look' stock from the driver's perspective. Plus you can buy a brand new tempomat stock from our forum sponsor, so you know that portion of the system will be ready to rock. Just a friendly suggestion

Thanks anghrist,
This is a good option I had not considered. I am in Australia and not that familiar with electrical things but getting better. Keeping the stalk is important to me for looks but the rest I'm not really fussed about. I was not confident to modify things so that was why I steered for components that just plug into each other. The Links you kindly gave take out this problem. You mentioned the OEM system is a problem. Are you refering to the amplifier only or the system as a whole. In Australia they are very uncommon from factory so 1st hand experience is few and far between. Regards Peter |

There are some major issues with the OEM bits compared to aftermarket.
1) Tracking down all of the bits to make it work would be a challenge and might get expensive... more so than the aftermarket systems. 2) The amplifiers can be rebuilt (resoldered), but if you lack familiarity with electronics, I would forget that as a DIY. 3) The 1980 would use the electro-mechanical throttle positioner, so vacuum would not be such an issue, but still, the aftermarket kits can be had for much less and there are plenty of resources here to help with the install. I went with a Rostra system myself, but the girlfriend doesn't know I have a tempomat retrofit in works for her old 1977 240D.
