500E original Sport line Wheel FOR SALE !!

Original steering wheel. Black leather like new!! (No air bag). I replaced it at 36,225 miles, for a matching wood set.

Diameter is 390 MM circumference, which is 10mm smaller than the 400 MM circumference on all other W-124 with the only exception being the Sport line version of the W-124 series 300-class wheel. Airbag of all W124 models starting from years of construction ´90 will feet.

Take it for $160. It is a real owners wheel!!

I’m located in Alexandria Virginia

It may be a real "owner's wheel", but NOT the owner of a 500E. The wheel in the photos is assuredly not a correct 500E steering wheel...it's the same as my '92 300D (and any other '92 W124), which I believe is 400mm.

See attached photo of a 500E wheel, attached to a 500E!

To tell the difference most easily, look at the size of the lower center opening-on a 500E, I cannot fit my clenched fist, which easily passes thru the larger diameter wheel.

I don't know what the deal is, Ricardo...I see the "390" stamp (as on my own wheel), but that's very clearly the larger-rimmed wheel...does the part number match a 500E wheel? Did you purchase a 500E-specific wheel, and did the airbag fit?

The wheel it is a 390mm. And it is 10mm smaller than the 400 mm on your '92 300D. It does come out of my 500E and it is the correct and original steering wheel for a 1992 500E German edition.

It is my understanding that 500E’s steering wheel design was change after 1992, to the one in your picture. At list for the German Edition.

I know exactly what you say by looking at the size of the lower center opening-on a 500E and...clenched fist, which easily passes thru the larger diameter wheel.

In fact, that was my main concern, when I was about to switch steering wheel’s; whether to sacrifice the sports line grip or get the comfort of a wood and lather steering wheel.

No one in the US would had supplied me with the 390mm steering wheel in the wood and leather combination to feet my original air bag. Finally, I decided to purchase a 400mm Blue Leather and walnut burl wood steering wheel, and that is what I have now!!

I’m going to get the part number for you and hopefully some pictures of a German web site with MB 500E 1991 or 1992 with the same steering wheel design as mine.

This is a 500E steering wheel! Maybe the US model did not come with the same type of 390mm steering wheel, in the early years.. I don’t know???.

Michael, I appreciate very much your observations, and I hope that if there is another member that owns a 92, 500E German edition, please check what I have written and confirm!!

Thank You

Ricardo

Ricardo,

Please know that my car is a '92 (6/92, US version) and has the same wheel as later model US cars that I've been in.

Now, if you were able to use the airbag that came with your car with the new 400mm wheel, then the wheel you're selling is a 400mm wheel, eh? If you swapped airbags, are you selling the correct one that fits the wheel that's for sale?

Still not getting it, compadre...wish I could help

I’m positive!! My steering wheel is a 390mm and does come out of my 500E and it is the correct and original for a 1992 500E German edition, as I stated before.

I’m not going to do any sale of the steering wheel if the subject is not clear!! .

Please, allow me to ship the steering wheel to you and you do the measuring your self. You come up to your own conclusions and ship it back (I will pay for the hole deal).

You can send me your address to my privet e-mail ricardo@quilsa.com. The steering wheel is in Alexandria Va, not to far from Connecticut.

Thanks

Ricardo

why such a hot debate?

I've been in 3 '92 500e's including my own that have the same wheel as Ricardo's. Seems conceivable to me that MBZ changed specs mid production as he has suggested. I like the other one, though.

I'm not trying to start any sort of debate here, just trying to ensurethat if a fellow 500E owner purchases this wheel for sale, it might not fit the airbag that came with the car.

I've got a copy of the late 1991 publication "Intro to Service" for the 400E/500E. In that document they reference a 390 mm steering wheel. Now, my early '92 car came with the smaller wheel, the rim of which I've replaced (and paid for!) so I'm certain of its size. As to Ricardo's wheel, I'm still confused.

Ricardo, another 500E owner on this board has a larger-diameter wheel, and was of the belief that a previous owner had swapped in a larger wheel. I'll measure his & compare it to my own (as well as my 300D) and let you know what we came up with. However, you didn't answer my queston about the airbag-were you able to re-use the bag that fit your original wheel? Can you provide the P/N for the wheel or airbag you have?

Just trying to help, I assure you Heck, I may even be interested in the wheel for my D if the airbag will fit...my current wheel is in poor shape

Build date on my 500E is 11/91 and my steering wheel is similar to Ricardo's. Frankly, I didn't even realize that the spokes were different since the wheel is smaller than the 400E I had.

Question

This is really baffling-I find it very unlikely that all of you have had your cr's wheel & airbag swapped out by previous owners...yet all 500Es supposedly came with 390 MM wheels. Can anyone with the larger-looking wheel actually measure theirs? Ricardo, do you have a Part Number on the wheel that's for sale?

I just measured it...15.25" which roughly is 390mm. So the spokes are the only difference, size is the same.

I’m sorry for not answering before!!

Michael

My original Air bag feet perfect on the aftermarket Leather/Burl wood steering wheel, that I had purchased; which is 400mm circumference and works for the E class “W124” models starting from ´90. I just had to dye (dark blue) the air bag. If you like to see some pictures click here: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4292282179 pic's #19 and #20

On the other hand, my original steering wheel has no part number stamped. There are some numbers but nothing close to the 10 digits. So, I called my MB dealer and they gave me the following parts number, base on my BIN number:

Steering Wheel Part No: 140 460 47 03
Air Bag Part No: 140 460 27 98

Regards

Ricardo

I'll check it out-thanks, Ricardo

Now, Ricardo, have you put the steering wheels up against each other and confirmed that the original is smaller?

Yes, I have!! And without doubt there is a difference on the diameter. The original steering wheel is smaller.

Best

Ricardo
