WTB: 14' Tobacco Brown (423) wheel covers
For my W114, I need a set of 4 wheel covers in Tobacco Brown (paint code 423). 14 inch size.
These appear on eBay but usually beat to all hell. Anyone have any in decent shape? |

I think the ones off of my parts car are tobacco... but I will have to check the vin to be sure on the color..
They have 230K on them so the paint is not new, but the metal is not bent up. I will confirm the color and if correct take some pics. |

It's easy enough to paint any hubcaps any color you want.

Thanks, appreciate it. My car has 330k on the clock, so wheels with 230 on them are almost too new!

Well, with those new hubcaps, turning back the odometer will be practically justified...!

Ron - I've painted the hubcaps on my 240D and my ponton. Using blue painter's tape, newspaper, RustOleum spray paint and an Exacto knife, it really wasn't bad at all and they look really good after at least ten years. The nice thing about them is that there is a little hump between the painted and unpainted parts and that makes it easy to trim the tape using your Exacto. Surely there is a close match to tobacco brown in RustOleum or Krylon. Oh, I did also use a generic paint remover to take the old paint off. No need to rough up the surface or use a primer. The key is to remove the masking tape before the paint dries.

Sorry I have not had a chance to check the vin yet to be sure what shade they are... to refresh my memory where is the color number in the vin sequence?

Len, agree again, I have done it on my 450 as well as my 220, I guess its not hard but tedious, some would equate tedious and time consuming as "hard"
I did like the outcome of my hubs, and they still look great

Sorry... I have been over busy and haven’t had a chance to get them out and take a pic of them..
I did look at the vin# and there is only 8 or so numbers?? I did find a owners ID plate with more numbers on it but I do not know if any tell what the original color was... The numbers stamped in the plate are 03-29-78 240D- 1231223-10-053685 161912-10-039855 000 424 39424 2 10-25-77 Does any of those say what the color was? |
