It's connected to a power cord that goes to wall and has buttons for you to call anyone like Aunt Mable for her apple pie recipe or perhaps you need to find out a number for the closest veterinary clinic cause the dog ate chocolate.

straight cable goes to the wall outlet. Land Line aka copper as its called in the old days.
Coiled cord goes from the fone to the handset I have one, the same exact model, a Red SL Fone as I called it, maybe I need to exercise my camera skills and show a picture of the phone as it is intended to be used (in my hands?)?

I still use a landline, and spent good money on a high-quality telephone for it. Sadly these sorts of phones usually have appalling sound, microphone, and overall quality.
