I'm looking for vintage license plate frames from California Mercedes dealers. At the moment I'm on the hunt for San Jose Mercedes dealer frames but I'm open to any frames people want to sell. Pairs preferred but I'll buy a Single frame as well. All conditions considered.

The two San Jose dealers changed names or rather lost their original names Smythe is now MB of Stevens Creek, Beschoff is now MB of San Jose.

Thank you, I did see that. Nearly all of the dealerships have changed hands or at least changed names since the 1980's. I was able to find a smythe European frame on eBay and purchased it. Do you know any history on smythe? When it opened and when it changed names?

You can get free frames from Stahl Motors in Monterey. While they are now called MBZ of Monterey, they still have frames that say Stahl Morors, Monterey. They were one of the very early dealerships in the USA.

Best place to find license plate frames is the P.D.I. (Pre Delivery Inspection) department of any dealership.That's the place where they change license plate frames after a dealer trade and you would be amazed at the collections some of these guys have.

Bill Smythe was an Air force veteran from WWII and he along with Larry Adams, Adams Buick, in San Francisco and others first became Buick dealers in the Bay Area. Subsequently obtained the Mercedes franchise, made a ton of money and sold it to I believe Autonation.

I worked for him briefly at the Buick Pontiac GMC store in the early nineties. The guy was a prince!
