What to do with Broken W123 Parts???

Hey All,

Just wondering what you all do with old broken/cracked or less desirable W123 parts?

Like most of you, when I acquire replacement parts (used or new), I end up with the old, broken parts that I no longer need but probably aren't worth putting on up ebay. I know it sounds ridiculous but I can't bring myself to throw them away because they are vintage parts but, they are broken, so maybe I should? Don't get me wrong, I know some parts just belong in the trash but what about stuff that can be glued and somewhat salvaged?

Should I throw this stuff away or should we start a thread on here so we can post old, broken (but possibly salvageable) parts that are not worth selling but would be available for free for those willing to pay for shipping and handling?

Or should we just throw this stuff away since they made so many of these cars/parts that we don't really need to keep old, broken parts around? Thoughts?

Location of your broken parts? Photos/list of said "broken" parts? (Maybe someone local can use them and/or pick them up). A "broken" engine may still have many useable parts on it, to someone like me.

One man's junk is another's (possible) treasure.

Or at the very least, can be recycled as scrap metal.

Lol ya I do the same thing. Always save them even tho I'm the back of my head I know I'm never ever gonna use them again lol

But ya you need at least a rough list of what you have and pictures of the more desirable items, as well as a big picture of the bulk of all of it.

First off, I'm in Los Angeles.

I definitely don't have anything as exciting as an engine or anything mechanical, at least not yet. The stuff I have is mostly plastic interior parts. Don't get too excited though, like I said, it all may be trash worthy.

Things I have:

1. I have two first aid kits with cracked/broken lids (both palomino) These are could be glued back together and although they might be a little brittle and fragile, they could at least do the trick cosmetically for the person that is missing their lid???

2. I have a driver's side kick panel with the dead pedal. You can see in the picture that the pedal has two large cracks in it. If you look at the picture of the back of it, you'll see that it has a few metal braces glued to the back of it to stabilize it. Granted, this doesn't look pretty but it would be underneath so you wouldn't see it. (Also in palomino)

3. I have one passenger side door map pocket. As you can see it's cracked in two places. This could also be glued. (This is NOT palomino, it's beige)

4. One door manual door crank/handle. The black handle itself is broken and missing the cap.

So, I don't know, all these parts seem to be readily available (new or from a scrapyard at least) so I'm not sure if this stuff is even worth trying to save. Should I just throw this stuff away?

Also, I don't know why my pictures keep getting rotated. I can't seem to find an option to rotate the pictures in the "manage uploads" section.

Sometimes pieces of broken parts can be used to repair other broken parts. As long as you keep the car, keep the parts.

The obvious solution is to buy a 123 parts car and store them in there.

That may not be practical to do unless you have enough land to park and store the car for free. Parking in Los Angeles county can be upwards of $100/a month and there are two problems with this (which I have experienced firsthand). One is you park one parts car. Then you happen to be browsing craigslist and find another....and another.... and another one you can rescue.

Obviously, if you're not in L.A. or a metropolitan area, this may not apply, but at least it makes you think whether or not that parts car is truly worth holding onto.

I didn't notice LA, that is an issue. I know that my parts car is full of marginal parts, they were removed because I had better options, but the marginal ones are still better than nothing....

I am keeping certain parts for sure but I definitely don't need the ones I posted above. I also live in a tiny apartment and every little bit of space counts.

Yeah, having a parts car would be great but that's definitely not practical where I'm at.

This brings me back to my original question....

What do I do with the broken parts that I posted above? I'll most likely throw them away. Ideally, someone local will want to come pick them up but I know that's not very likely.

It has taken me years — literally— to just let go and to toss them. Of course I have a large parts horde also which I’m finally selling off too. If I had the space and time I would have endless shelving and endless organized boxes of parts. I had the same sort of broken parts for example at one time but I eventually sent the plastic to the recycle bin. Metal to the scrap yard.

If you don't want the two first aid kits, I have none. I'll pay the postage if you want to clean house. I can fix them artfully. Send me a note on postage that I can send via Paypal.
