WTB: 300SDL or 350SDL 1988-1991

I just sold my gasoline Benzes and want to go bavk to diesel. I actuall had a 1982 240d w/ 2500 miles on it but I sold it so I could buy an SL. I really miss thatr car being 4-speed and diesel....

Im mainly looking for 1988-1991 300SDL or 350SDL as long as there is SERVICE RECORDS and relatively LOW mileage. ANything from 0-100,000 miles is fine... Im also in a $6,000 - $13,000 price range. MUST BE the "SDL" models and not the "SD"

Thanks...

Don't even buy one with a new engine. They might be "junk" too.

BEWARE!

I'm going to keep driving this car until things get worse. I will NOT be taking this thing on long trips, that's for sure.

I've been hearing lately alot of bad news for the 350 diesel. What is the main reason for staying away with this model? I have been hearing different stories around... I've been told that Id be better off with the 300SDL...

Search for "rod bending".

You have to go back to 86-87 for a 300SDL. 90-91 for a 350SDL.

Warren (turnne1) had his 92 300SD up for sale a while back. A lot of miles but it's in impeccable shape if still available. No LWB W140 Diesels were offered in the US and I think the world.

87 300SDL ... too many miles and too few records for you

What did they have for 88-89? Or did they not have a diesel those years? This brings up something I've been curious about, as I've not been able to figure out if all 6 cylinder diesels were bad. Confusing, as I read about rod bending and then others recommending the 87 300D for something fast. So, I gather from this thread that the problems didn't start until the 350? And that the 250 in the E class is okay?

I think the 190D 2.5 and 2.5t were the only MB Diesels offered in the US in 88 and 89.

sixto,

The 190D 2.5 turbo was only sold in '87 and the only diesel sold during '88-'89 was the 190D 2.5.

No one asked me, but I'll chime in anyway.

I respectfully disagree with Dr. Booth's stalwart opinion.

Just search for glowplug problems or air flow sensor devices. Other than that, I'm sure they're fine. The engines will certainly last 500K miles and beyond, that is, if you want to keep ripping out glowplugs.

BTW, the heads on the OM603 will NOT crack provided the engine has NOT been overheated.

Now, what do the new CDI's have in store for us? The worst I've heard is on the Sprinter vans, they shutoff for no particular reason. I guess an electronic glitch? The engines are still pretty tough, from what I've read.

Notice on MBUSA's website the writeup for the CDI....

"3,222-cc DOHC 24-valve Inline-6. Cast-iron cylinder block.
High-strength aluminum-alloy head.
Reinforced engine block, oil pan structure, pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft.
"

CAST IRON CYLINDER BLOCK
no aluminum here

HIGH STRENGTH ALUMINUM HEAD
Thank God, no head warping/cracking!

REINFORCED ENGINE BLOCK, OIL PAN STRUCTURE, PISTONS, CONNECTING RODS, AND CRANKSHAFT

Alright!!!!! Its not going to be a 350!!!!

Is Mercedes trying to appeal to us dieselheads?
