WTB AC for W111 1962 220sb

I am in need of an AC system for my fintail. It is a 1962 220sb W111 chasis. Does anyone have a system or indivdual parts would be fine.

Let me know....

Are you looking for the original Mercedes 'Kuhlmeister' hang-on AC unit? (I think those were actually made in Texas by Thermo-King) I have a Kuhlmeister kit but unfortunately it's reserved for my '60 220Sb. I may still have an extra '60s vintage hang-on AC unit (not kuhlmeister) up in my attic or shed but I'll have to look. It would be just the fan/evaporater unit that hangs under the dash - no compressor, hoses or condenser.
I've occasionally seen the Kuhlmeister AC units on Ebay but they've been pretty expensive. If you don't need the Kuhlmeister, the universal hang-on AC units, as originally sold by Sears and Wards in the '60s, sometimes turn up at flea markets and Ebay but you'll probably need to make up your own compressor brackets, drive pulley, etc...
Or you might consider a NEW hang-on AC kit. Those can be found in Hemmings or possibly JC Whitney.

Mark, at this point I am looking for anything that will fit. The Kuhlmeister units I have seen are very expensive. Yesterday I opulled a bracket and Compressor off a 1970 300SE that was in the Picka Part in Houston, so I am tryign to piece together a system. If you get a chance to see what you have lutking that would be great. I hate not being able to drive my car, but with it being black and the temperature pushing 95*, not a great combo with out some sort of AC.

Thanks

Marc

Marc,
If that 300SE was a 6 cylinder, did you check the engine belt drive pulley? If it's interchangeable, it would make your AC installation alot easier. When I was planning AC for my Ponton 180b, back in '83, my local Mercedes dealer had the Fintail crank pulley in stock (It wouldn't fit my Ponton because of frame/stabiliser-bar clearance problems)
I don't know if that Fintail pulley is still availible now.

I haven't found my extra AC unit yet. Have you found any salvage yards down your way that have '60s & '70s vintage cars or trucks. You might be able to find a universal hang-on AC unit there.
Also, many cars & trucks have had aftermarket AC installed that used a hang-on type AC box, connected to custom ducts/vents that made the AC look like a factory installation. If you can't find a universal hang-on AC, you may be able to 'customise' one of those to work in your car.

For what to expect when you get AC in your Benz, I had a black '66 Fintail 230 with the hang-on Kuhlmeister. While the unit cooled OK, if it was a very hot, sunny day, It was almost impossible to really cool the interior. I often had to blow the AC directly on me. That original York compressor was noisy too but it was still better than no AC.
Do a search for AC on the Vintage Forum for more info, ideas & suggestions on adding/upgrading AC in older Benzes.

Mark,
Thanks for the info. Yes, the 300SE was the inline 6 cylinder. I grabbed the bracket and the York compressor. My car came with power steering and as such has the larger front drive pulley. I have the extra slot already for the AC belt. One less thing to do. The bracket lines up pretty well, except for a bolt they had going into the intake manifold. It does interfear with the heat shield on the intake manifold, and the hot air duct work that goes to the air cleaner. Do you remember how yours was set up. Trying to make sure this bracket will work.

I've heard the the units aren't great, with only marginal cooling, but as you said anything is better than nothing.

Thanks

Marc

Marc,
The Fintail 'Kuhlmeister' (Thermo-King) AC was authorised by Mercedes but the units were mostly dealer installed.
As I recall, on my '66 230, part of the compressor bracket was bolted to one of the intake/exhaust manifold studs. The original nut on that stud had been replaced with a long 'coupling-nut', to which one of the AC bracket bolts could be fastened. Any factory heat-shield, that may have been there, was probably removed by the original installer.
I just looked at the AC installation (Behr) in my '72 250 (2.8-single cam-carburetted) That AC bracket is bolted directly to an ear on the intake manifold. You may need to be a little creative to fit the 300SE bracket into your 220S You've been saved a major hassle by already having the engine AC pulley. If they're salvageable, the AC hoses, fittings and condenser off that 300SE might also work in your Fintail.

What about the evaporator? Wouldn't that be a difficult part consiering the dash, making drains, etc. or am I too confused? I'm jealous, my car has all the A/C stuff but it's blows hotter than my heat? Darn wacky w116's.
Thanks
David

David you are correct, the evaporator form the 300SE is incorporated into the dash so I can not use it. However, the engine is the same layout as mine, so many of the parts can be used. On the older cars, the evaporator hung under the dash with small tubes going thru the tunnel for drainage.

I'm not absolutely certain since I can't see your 300SE AC bracket and I no longer have my 230 Fintail but there may be another detail if you're going to use a later type AC bracket in a 220S. On my '72 250, there's supposed to be an additional strut or bar that fastens to the bottom of the AC bracket. The other end bolts to one of the 4 motor mount arm bolts on the right side of the engine block. After I got my 250 in '87 and repaired the AC, I discovered that my AC strut was missing. I never replaced it. It's absence didn't cause me any problems, except for extra noise and vibration when the AC was working.

Mark, I think the manifold off the 300 was the same as your 250, there was a tab on it, where the third bolt was fastened. I am thinking I can add a brace and tie it in on a manifold nut. The other two holes in the front of the engine line up perfectly. Hopefully it won't be to much of a problem. Trying to find an older bracket has been a real chore.

Thanks

Marc, where did you end up taking your car? I'm thinking about K&H in midtown. He had some low hourly rates compared to others. Plus I see lots of classics in their parking lot.

Yes I did go to K& H. Karl is the older German guy, one of the owers, and very nice. He did some adjusting on my clutch at no charge and said to come back when I was ready to get it replaced. He also seemed to know what he was doing and talking about. I will be going back there when I get ready to do the clutch job.
