WTB 4 spd manual trans

The manual trans in my 1980 is a bit noisy. It grinds if I am not very carefull shifting up. If I take it slow and pause in neutural I can avoid the grinding. I have talked to a couple of local shops who shake their head and say "Mercedes Benz, very expensive.", just like the guy at the local repair shop that gave me a price of $500 for an R4 A/C compressor.

I have been looking for a good used transmission, and or a good shop to go through mine. Any suggestions in Los Angeles or Southern California.

Also, the U-joint in the driveshaft has a nasty slap. I have been given a price of around $300 for a driveshaft rebuild, not including R&R.

My 80 trans does the same thing....
try a search for Redline with jimsmith in the right box...
I have picked up mine to install but haven't yet....
This might help in the meantime..... while you look for a good trans...

4 speed transmission

I've a 4 speed transmisssion which I picked up to put in a 300DT but then found a 5 speed. The 4 speed came out of the Bay Area Mercedes Club, President's 280CE. He used this 4 speed in his car for a short time but then had his original one rebuilt and replace this 4 speed with the original one.

Seems there are two different rear ratios for the 4 speeds and this one has the higher ratio first gear. That means if you're running a turbo 3.07 rear end ratio it's slow off the mark. The MBZ pres didn't like the slower accleration, hence the switch back.

If, however, you're running any of the lower rear end ratios as found in 240Ds or 300Ds, you'll have no problems getting off the mark.

I live in northern Nevada, south of Reno. What's your offer??

leathermang,

I have read several of the posts regarding MT90. It took me a while before I knew what I was looking for, but I eventually figured out that the wrong lubricant might be causing my problem. I located a Redline dealer just a few miles away and will see if that makes a difference.

Ridge,

I will be in Reno in August. I think my trans will hold that long at least, in fact I am not sure that it will not last several more years. I may also be heading up to Susanville and Alturas to shop for land soon. I would like to talk to you about your 4 speed. Auto transmissions are a dime a dozen in the self sercive salvage yard, but manuals are harder to come by.
