F/S avanteguard grill for 124 chassis

Hello all. I ordered 2 by mistake from http://www.matrixcar.de/ It is a genuine German made grill insert for your 86-93 W124 It uses your existing grille freme, and swapping the inserts takes 15 minutes. Please visit the above website to view the item. Search for "grille with mulding" It is still new in the box in the wrapper. Cost Me $135, I'll sell it for $120 shipped

doesn't that model use solid aluminum "chrome" shtrips across the front (not folded aluminum like the OEM uses)?
I had one of these, it looked great from a distance, but the Germans that modified it from supposedly a 600 (or was it a 500E?) left a weakness around the edges, it didn't fit the W124 frame between clamp points, and was flaky at best.
I took it off recently after someone backed into it, it cracked like an egg.

I hate to steal your opportunity to sell the item but feel someone needs to alert the world to the fact that these are compromised for structual strength, unless of course they made some improvements since I bought mine in January (04). I feel the German aftermarket items for grille trim etc doesn't even come close to OEM quality.

I'm not sure of the construction. But I can tell you that the product fit my 124 grill frame perfectly. It took longer to remove the old grill than it did to install the new one. I can not attest to the strength of the product, but I am sure mine would would crack if someone backed into it. Havng said that, I am quite sure that the factory grill would crack as well if confronted with the bumper of a car. I appreciate your desire to keep everyone informed, and I do not take offense to your comments, but I am of limited mechanical ability, and had no problem getting the grill to fit. I think that there may be some differences between the two products we are discussing. I agree that the OE products are probably built to a higher standard than most aftermarket items. The same can be said about most any OE manufacturer. The OE S600 grill insert is around $300 before modification to fit the 124. This one is $120 shipped. Let the buying public make their own conclusions.

And where exactly are you going to find an OEM avantgard grill for a W124? My goodness just let the man sell his part and keep your comments to yourself.

I have one of these grill inserts from matrixcar.de, and I love mine.

They look 1000% better than the orginal "egg crate" gray colored inserts.

Both are made from plastic, and will surely break if involved in an accident.

The last W124 was sold in 1995, which means that if the original grill insert is intact, it is now 9 years old, and surely oxidized and brittle from age.

These aftermarket inserts from matrixcar.de are constructed completely different than the original ones. They are impossible to compare, other than that the repalcement ones are well-made and sturdy, and they fit perfectly. They are not flimsy.

Mine has held up will for two years now, with not a scratch.

Diesel- thanks sharing your experience with your grill.

I like to hear as much as possible regarding possible positives or negatives on related parts items to make a better informed decision.

best regards

Thanks for the responses from everyone. I am not looking to start a flame war, but simply sharing my experiences and opinions with the OE grill that I had, and the matrixcar.de grill that I now have. I am simply looking to sell my part. No more, and no less. I like the product. I am using the product on my own car. I simply have a brand new extra one that I thought someone would be interested in purchasing for a savings off list price.

I feel its open forum for comments - pro and con - my goodness Yal go away! you might appreciate the truth someday I hope.
As for where to find, I called Bekkers last month the see if they had one in stock, they didn't have the early W124 Avantgarde grilles but they had the late (93-95) models in stock. These are also selling (rather cheap) in Germany:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7906625808&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
But I don't read German so can't tell if its the same or different.
Good luck!
