17" wheel & tire swap

I installed a set of 17x7.5 wheels on my 1990 300e. I immediately hear this noise like a cable is rattling inside of its jacket, comming from the right rear or center rear axle. When I put the 16" wheels back on the rear, the noise goes away. The 17" wheels are hubcentric and have plenty of clearance.Would the 17"wheels cause the wheel speed sensors to act erractic? That's the only thing I see that could be making the noise I described.Any help would be greatly appreciated

Did you check to see how the new wheels clear the suspension components?

Also - aftermarket wheels can be thicker or thinner than OE wheels at the bolt seating surfaces. if they're thinner - the lug bolts can protrude out the back, scraping brake components and making a racket. You should be able to check the thickness of the wheel by putting a bolt in the wheel (off the car), measure how far it sticks out the back of the wheel, and compare with OE wheels.

Hope this helps.

thanks Troy, that was the fix,I installed washers between the rotor and the wheel, and that was enough to shorten the new screws

I think you ought to seriously consider just getting shorter bolts.

ellerbrook, I second PJG56's comment. You would be better off buying the proper length lug bolts. The washer spacers are likely to cause problems ... for instance when someone services your car. Nobody would expect washer spacers between the wheel and the hub, and they may leave one or more out when reinstalling the wheels. You're inviting trouble.

Serious Problem

Don't use washers to increase the spacing - Mercedes use what is known as "hubcentric" wheels - meaning that the circular center of the wheels mates with a corresponding circle on the hub. It is this precise matching that bears the weight of the car on the wheels. If you use washers - the wheels may not be seated on the hub. Mercedes wheels bolts aren't meant to support the weight of the car - but rather just to keep the wheel in place. Buy yourself the correct length lugnuts. Your wheels could suffer from balance problems to much worse with washers in place.
