For you pilots with cars that have staggered tire sizes, such as E55, C43, SLK230 Sport, CLK430 or SL500 Sport. Since you can not rotate any of your tires because the rear is two wide for the front and the tires are directional and can not rotate left to right and vice-versa. Do you get much uneven tire wear and do you quickly run out your fronts with plenty of tread left on the rear?. Is having staggerd tire sizes worth the extra trouble and expense for the front wheels?

I feel tire rotation is a much over-rated maneuver on rear wheel drive cars. Porsche has much larger rear wheel sizes than the fronts and "granted" they wear out faster. However, they carry much more weight and are subjected to much more power application. Go for it, the long term expense will be minimal

One other thing to consider is that even if you cannot rotate a staggered setup (with directional and/or asmmetric tires) you can still play around with the alignment a bit. If you are wearing the outer shoulder of the fronts from cornering ask the alignment shop to dial in more negative camber and keep toe-in to min-spec. The last thing you can do is to get a tire that is known for its resistance to shoulder wear under harsh conditions. The P-Zero is known for being just that. However they also have a rep for being noisy as hell. It just depends on what is important to you. In any case, keep the same brand/model tire on all four corners to keep erratic handling and ASR/ABS malfunction away.
Hope this helps...Lee |
