Dechroming wheels - can it be done well?

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

So I have this Aero I wheel kicking around the basement that I bought to match the set on my car. Early wheel, right offset, perfect match. Only problem is it's in Chrome. These things are about as soft as tin cans and bend easy, so it makes good sense to have a spare. Can these be dechromed and painted? If I have a polished lip on my set, could I have the chrome wheel lip polished once dechromed or will it be too porous or ugly, etc?

Thanks!
Scott

'First thing I ran across on the web.

ANYTHING can be "Fixed". Question is Cost and Skill of Artisan doing work.

Yep, I've had the full set of four straightened and refinished to like new. Awesome job. Pulled out multiple bends from each wheel. The shop that did it had never dechromed a wheel though, and weren't sure what would happen once you did.

If somebody offers to blast it for you, don't let them. Chrome has to be chemically stripped off in a metal refinishing shop, the kind that does plating, etc. I had it done on a set of early monoblocks and it wasn't inexpensive. But the end result was great, the stripping process is apparently akin to a polishing, so the aluminum was perfect.

Good to know it can be done well. Thanks Mark!
