Unhappy "Real" spare tire options for ML320???

Hi all,

I need some help. After my 4th tire flat/blowout in the mountains in 2 years with my ML320, I need a real spare tire! Since this truck comes with only a little spare donut without the space in the current mechanism for a real spare, anyone know what options I have? It hard to figure that MB positions this as a SUV but figures you will never have a flat tire in other than perfect conditions. The MB dealership I get service from has not been helpful. I do see that MB has a rear mounted swinging latch spare holder that is available in Europe/Canada but not the US for some reason. Any ideas or info is very appreciated.

Cheers,
JC

And extrenal spare tire holder witha full saize spare is probably your best bet if you don't want to lose interior space, or just get aan extra full size wheel and tire, and strap it to the roof rack when you go off roading.

I thought the spare under the ML was a "full-size" one anyway...or am I mistaken?

Unfortunately no....

the ML320 cannot hold a full size spare in its standard spare housing under the truck. Yes some type of external "gate" holder is probably what I must do. Just looking for any other experiences and specifics with the types of holders anyone has seen for the ML320.

Much appreciation for the replies!

Has Mercedes started using those ridiculous mini-spares?

I would insist on a real spare, or no sale. Atrocious!

I have read that the M 55 comes with a full-sized spare tire. I have actually seen a picture of the spare-tire holder that sits on the left side of the "way-back" under the window. I dont know how much space this takes up but it would look better than having the spare on the hatch.

periokid:

You got a "deal" from MB, a can of tire sealer in exchange for a spare.

Cost cutting, more cost cutting, then there is nothing to cut someday.

The reason...

Actually the car does not have a spare tire because the spare that comes with the 320's and 230's can not fit over the front brakes on the SLK 32. A bigger spare would not fit in the trunk.

I think of it as weight savings, it makes me feel better

Well, if MB wants to have a spare in the SLK, it can design one. It does not have to use the same from the 320's and 230's. It will cost them, though. In other words, they will lose more money! (DC lost money in 2001)

I bet the tool kit will be the next one to be cut.

Like the sealed transmission, MB will seal their cars so no tool kits are needed.
