When we bought our black/black 420SEL it had dry-rotted Michelin MX4V's on it. Not really sure how old they were at the time but they were worn as well. The car did a lot of sitting I think. The bearing races had wear spots. (idk if that was 100% caused by sitting or not..)

I replaced them with a set of General Altimax HP tires. I've got General Exclaim's on my 190E. My 300D has MXV4s.

I've no complaints about my current MXV4's nor the Generals. On the 190,I had Falkens before the General Exclaims..and they were meh.

I would have to see what ppl consider; "dry rot."

My last set of Michelin XPS Ribs I bought for my truck developed thousands of tiny micro-slits on all their sidewalls, regardless whether they were in the direct rays of the sun. All tire pressures were right on at the correct tires pressures, FYI. This malady developed inside of four years IIRC. I took the truck to Discount Tire, after contacting Michelin on their 800 line, and Discount Tires called Michelin with the corroborating condition, Michelin allowed 50% off a new set as an adjustment. This was fine with me, and I had the replacement set installed 12.'11. So far, so good.

The only Michelin tire I recall having a problem other than my truck, was about 8 years ago on my old 99 E300 car. There was a blister outward in the sidewall down near the tread on the inside of one tire. Discount Tire replaced it @ no charge, b/c I buy the certificates when I buy tires from Discount.

As far as having a failure of a Michelin while driving? It's never happened to me. Keep an eye on your tires - regardless age/brand. Especially note the inside tire sidewalls - as that's where I found a Michelin tire in the process of failing with that protruding blister!

This is what my MXV4's had. Actually, they're still "in use" holding up a parts car at my buddy's house.

Michelin used to be a top customer of ours back in the hey day of my career. I've been in Michelin plants in the SouthEast, the Michelin engineering headquarters in France and quite a few times in a Michelin plant in Oklahoma.

I was not in the plants in the South East enough to get to know anyone there, but I got to know a number of people in the non union Michelin plant in Norman, Oklahoma. I have been in LOTS of different plants and each one has it's own personality like people do. Most plants, union or non union don't seem to have a happy work force. Michelin has a VERY happy work force. If these people feel down trodden in any way, I sure haven't been able to tell it.
Larry,
I find the espiritdecorps in the private sector alive and well.

However, not so much in this example:
The only down trodden factory workers I recall seeing in recent history in N. Texas are the GM Arlington, TX Government/union labor workers complaining on TV every so many years here. That, is a well-documented event by the media here. IIRC, they're pulling down on-average upwards of $60.00 an hour too!

I only buy Michelin tires for all of my cars. I have had nothing but success with them on everything from light trucks to cars. The only problem I had was a blowout about 3-4 years ago on my 240D but those tires were about 12 years old at the time and I should have already replaced them.
