Tire Rubbing Action...Need Suspension?
Hey guys,
I've read these threads for a while, but this is my first post. I have a 190e 2.6 which i put 17x8 Helo Euro's w/ 225/45/17ZR Nitto NT450's.... I also have ~130 pounds of audio equipment in my trunk which lowers my rear OE suspension ~ 1.2" Enough background....When I hit a dip in the road the front part of the front wheel flares rub against the tire (the tires peek 4mm out of the front part of the flare)....this means the suspension moves 1.5" down. I want a new suspension, w/o putting a bullet in my wallet. What is a good combo of decent ride but tight-so-my-tires-don't-get-poked suspension? Can/Should I only do the front to maybe get an angled look? Posted some pics for clarity. Any Help appreciated...Enjoy, Tammam |

You have the wrong size tires on your 190 ... you should have the 215/45-17 size

I called the guy back who sold them to me...he said that his database says the tires should fit...obviously not. I guess i would also need to get my fender flared out. Does anyone knowhow much that would run? Or adecent place in south Orange County that could do it?
Thnx in advance, Tammam |

his database is wrong he should be able to remedy the problem for you by exchanging for the correct tire size

I called the dude back...I told him that tirerack's database shows 215...he said that it was too late to do anything anyway, and there was no way he would have my rims/tire shipped back, replaced, and shipped again. So i guess I'm SOL.
At least the footprint looks sexy (trying to be optomistic ) I did my shopping, but i didn't think someone would give me freaky specs. Thanks for ur help luke, I think i'm going to have to modify the body. Tammam |

Tammam: Why don't you post the name of this dealer so we can all avoid them??

my experience
I had that same problem, so I staggered the tires. The front has 205/45/17 and the back 215/45/17 on Khumos. I shaved a bit where u have the problem in the front. I dropped all around 1.5in. and it is fine now.
Good luck! |

I've been there and done all of that. First of, your suspension with your stereo equipment does add to the factor. But more over, its the fact that even if you lower your car with suspension equipment...it might help. It has to do with the spring rates.
Like My car dropped about 1.5" int he back because of the stereo equipment. But after lowering it...it actually set only .2" more lower with the ewuipment...The biggest advantage is it didn't bounce as much, or dip as low...because the spring rates were stiffer. Second, I did get a fender flare done, and also shaved the inner bit of the lip of. I basically cut it down, treated it with anti-corrosive primer...and took a fine brush and painted it over with the proper body color paint that the MB Body shop uses. I also went down a size. First of 225/45/17s shouldn't be used on a 190E. I have Eibachs, with the lowest perch height in the front, and number 3 in the back. My offset of my 17x7.5 wheels are 37...so they are right at the limit, because I had 17x7.5 ET 30s from a friend' 190E and did a test fit, and they rubbed with 215/40/17s. I've used 225/40/17 (only Nitto makes them) 215/40/17s and 215/45/17s. I would say 215/45/17 for a stock suspension, 225/40/17 if you want the widest, but you will have to fenders rolled and 215/40/17 if you lower it alot! Honestly, I would raise the car up a little more and stick with the 225/40/17s as they were the best setup I experienced. Flip note, I'm using MB Sportline Shocks and Struts which are basically Bilstein Sports...and they work great. I would also mention the reason I liked the 225s is they provided more rubber then the 215s both in height and width....and not only that, they had a higher load rating then my 185/65/15s. I used 215/50/16s in between all that...and that was a big tire to use, but filled the wheel wells nicely. In all honesty...Get Eibachs or H&Rs (or even sportline springs if you don't want to lower it that much but still turn up the flavor)....play around with the perch pad a little (I used taller ones in the back because my system weighed the car down) and get good shocks and struts. That will eliminate alot of the dipping that causes the tires to rub. Springs are about $200 +/-, shocks and struts about $500 +/- and a good fender roll that might even flare it a little would be any reputable body shop that deals with MBs. They should heat the paint and roll it. That costed me $100, and then cutting that extra lip and painting that was an additional $25. Hope that helps.

Thanks for ur help....
It seems a fender roll would do the trick...I'm also thinkin about koni adjustable springs or the H&R coil-over kit (tirerack says they have some for my car - Luke can u verify that?) I understand about the spring constant (I never liked physics) W/ these mods Ithink I can get the 225/45/17 to fit in the front wells. In the future I'll stagger 225/40 and 215/40. U live, u get screwed but u learn Thanks again. Tammam |

Handling Changes?
What happens to the oversteer/understeer when you put smaller width tires in the front than in the rear?
