I recently installed a set of 17” AMG Monoblock II rims on my ’92 400E. I choose 215/45/17 tires for the front and 225/45/17 for the rear. When I looked down on the front tires, the rubber really sticks outside the fender. This set of rim belonged to a 300E before. The rubber was inside the front fender edge when the rims were on the 300E, even with 225 tires. What is the difference between the 400E and the 300E in this area? I’m guessing that maybe the center part of the front rotor disc is thicker on the 400E than the 300E. Can I use a different rotor disc to correct this problem? I really need some advice. It is too late for me to find other rims with different offset.

Jason,
From what you have described it sounds like the offset is incorrect for your application. I'm not sure of the minute, exact suspension differences between a 300E and 400E (help Benzmac) You definitly dont' want to mess with the brakes you have. With the much heavier V8 up front you need the extra stopping power. (see 400E review on this site) I know that when I ran 225/50/16 Firestone SZ50's on Borbet type T 16x7.5 or 8.0 rims.(I forget offhand) front AND rear on my 93 400E it fit fine. No sticking out and no rubbing even at steering lock with the 225's up front. I ordered the wheels and tires together from Tirerack specifically for my application. Their in-house experts took care of the offset question. If you can find out what offset you have on the AMG's try calling tirerack and talking to one of their reps. Failing that, I might be selling my Borbet's separately if your interested in a wheel that I know would fit. (the 400E is being sold to make room for incoming 500E)

Hope this helps....Lee
