About my '98. Thought about it today, went out and looked the car over, and just can't see myself going below what we have discussed. Sorry. I guess its worth more to me than anyone else.

My main issue with S350s isn't the rod bending issue, it just the fact that the W140s are so damn big! I don't like big women and I don't like big cars.
I'm sure there are those who disagee with me, but I firmly believe that by the time your 95 came out, MB had resolved the rod bending issue. Your 375,000 mile run that you got from your 95 is testimony to that. Your 375,000 miles before oil consumption began run proves something else as well: Engines do wear out eventually. I'd hate to pay more than a few thousand dollars for a car that doesn't have at least 200,000 miles left in it.

I don't think we've seen this one before. Not a bad deal, but the one year older CDI that I'm pursuing has the same number of miles and is $2,000 cheaper. Since almost everybody seems to be afraid of Bluetecs, I expect this car will be for sale for a while as was the 07 that I posted about a few posts back. That car was over $1,000 cheaper as well. After this one gets it's price reduced, it will be a good deal, one that I will try to take advantage of if I lose my CDI. Thanks for the link!
Board member Rollguy has an 05 CDI and an 07 Bluetec, and he seems to like the 07 Bluetec a little more. The 07 has more power and more torque, and the added advantage of two extra gears, a lower low gear and a higher high gear. That 7 spd isn't as durable or DIY friendly, but there's no denying what it does for fuel economy and performance. I figure a guy who owns both should know. I still have that one fear of the 07s though, the fact that it is the first year of the new powertrain. Buying a first year run of anything is hardly ever a good idea! Yet another factor that I'm considering is the fact that through the upcoming years, CDIs are going to hold their values much better than Bluetecs will because I don't think people are ever going to get past their fears of Blutecs, and the vast majority of them are never going to figure out that not all Bluetecs are the same. That makes the CDI a better investment, as well as a car that I stand a much better chance of getting my money back out of should it ever be hit and totaled. I have to consider these things as I have had a total of 4 cars hit in my lifetime, one got hit twice! That's a total of 5 times! All while parked! The CDI deal is still on. The seller hasn't had the time to sell it, and I haven't had the time to go buy it. He now has to leave town on business, but when he gets back, we are both determined to make it happen. All things considered, I still want this CDI the most. My main fears of the 06 are the SBC system and black death. The bare top of this 06's engine is beautiful! And it already has a brand new SBC unit, with receipt.

05 cdi $13900 near Seattle
FWIW
I think this was a previous find but - its Bue, its a 2005 cdi and it only has 85K miles on it. I wonder how far they will come down on price? Its called a "rebuilt" on title - is that a way of saying it was to be a salvage vehicle but got fixed up - so basically a play on words meaning the same thing? Anything over about $7000 may not be a good investment https://seattle.craigslist.org/est/cto/d/2005-e320-cdi-mercedes-diesel/6559682113.html

I do not see anyone coming down $7000.....
And rebuilt title I believe means it was in an total loss accident but it was fixed and paid by insurance. A salvage title would be the car was is a total loss accident and the guy took the payout from the insurance company instead of having it fixed. This usually means u fix it yourself or just leave the damage as is.

But isn't the title supposed to have salvage or rebuilt somewhere on it? And not just on a Carfax report.

Depending on the state. In Pa if you buy a car at the insurance auction you get a Salvage certificate. You may not register or legally use the vehicle on the road, however you may repair the vehicle and put it through an enhanced inspection. If it passes you will get a branded title and it says 'reconstructed' on it. With this you may register and legally use the vehicle.

Ya it's the same in Seattle (I live in same area as the car in question), I took the payout once on an old Honda and didn't realize I had to go thru the inspection. Got a huge ticket haha.
Maybe the "rebuilt" could mean either the shop fixed the "total loss" vehicle thus making it road worthy or that u take the payout, fix it yourself, the go thru the State Patrol vehicle inspection and they rebrand it to "rebuilt" That makes sense to me, so a rebuilt brand seems to be one step up from a salvage brand. And yes it says it on the title, the only way it will say rebuilt or salvage on Carfax is if it was officially rebranded at the DMV. On a Washington title, it will not say "rebuilt" or "salvage" specifically, there will be a set of numbers under the "brands" section on the title. And those numbers are a code that either means salvage or rebuilt or etc. You usually have to google it or just be keen enough to know what the number mean. Whatever it means I would say that the rebuilt title is your biggest bartering point in this sale. Your average Joe usually will see rebuilt or salvage title and completely steer clear, but people that are more mechanicly inclined don't get as worried.

i was curious about why the car was 'totaled' with such minor damage, as described in the ad for the Seattle car....i found this informative article about how insurers figure out when/if to declare a total loss, even with what appears to be minor damage. the biggest concern, for me, is having to insure the vehicle after the title brand is applied. you could have a perfectly good, safe vehicle that you cannot fully insure due to the title status.

Well in my case the damage was the front bumper, hood, and right fender. The bids I got were more than the insurance company wanted to pay. So they paid me for what they thought the car was worth and then gave it to me. I had the car fixed and ended up making money on it by doing all the work myself except the painting. More or less just taking parts off and replacing with new. Had it inspected and nothing on the title changed.

Hi all. Thanks for the link to the Seattle car Reid, but I've been absent too long and now the car is gone.
My CDI tiggered it's CEL and the seller knew I wouldn't want to buy it till we knew why and/or fixed it and/or adjusted the price accordingly. Turned out to be low fuel presure caused by a loose fitting. So the deal is still on, now the plan is to do it this coming Friday. This latest issue gave me pause (again) but then I see this ad: https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/d/2005-mercedes-e320-cdi-diesel/6561474561.html Now, disregarding the seller's nonsense about these cars lasting a million miles, the car's 360,000 miles does make a good case that maybe these CDIs are good cars after all. I'm fired up again! Hopefully everything will line up and I'll have a good car soon. The point that was made (I believe by Reid) about not being able to get a fair payout if a car with a salvage title is ever hit again remains valid. That was something I hadn't considered and is causing me to want to avoid salvage/rebuild/rebuilt titled cars. Does anyone know if rebuild/rebuilt title cars suffer this same fate when it comes time to settle with an insurance company?

Hey Eric,
I wondered if you were back yet. sorry the Seattle car didn't pan out. CA does not have rebuilt titles AFAIK, but in any case I would call your insurance co and see what their coverage might (or might not) be. Suggest giving them a VIN# off a car you saw FS, just so its something they can out into their computer, after all I doubt ins co employees will step out on a limb and say anything without consulting a digital device on their company network, like they are trained to be stupid. At lest one of them I had to deal with was. In that light, here is a link to some reading material, and please keep us informed. CDI is 05 and 06 only. 07 is the first Bluetec.
Are you going to grab it?
