Intermittant Stalling

My 2000 ML 320 is intermittantly stalling. Sometimes its starts back up, sometimes not (usually to my wife when I'm not there to help).

Brand new battery.

Any ideas?

I've searched this and 2 other forums to no avail. Been lurking here for some time, learning alot about my ML along the way.

I've owned alot of German cars over the years (VW, BMW), but never a Mercedes. This is becoming frustrating and I hope to avoid going to the Stealer, unless I have to.

Thanks so much for everyones collective knowledge. This is a great forum to learn and share the "ML experience".

When does it do it? Ours seems to be associated with prolonged trips. It's only done it 2 or 3 times though, so it is hard to diagnose.

Re:Stalling

Its happened 3 times in the past week, once to me and twice to my wife.

It will be idling at a stoplight and just die. It started for me right away, and once it started for my wife, once it refused to start for 15-30 mins.

It only seems to happen when idling. Threw some fuel system cleaner in it, as well as gas-drier in hopes it was just some bad gas or water in tank.

When it did not start, both the main key and the "mickey-mouse" key were tried. After a little sit, it did start.

I am guessing maybe the fuel pump, but I hate to do it unless its broke.

Hate to bring out your worst fears, but that is a sign of your fuel pump going south!

Mine did that intermittently starting last December (hard starting, occasional stalling, etc.) I chose to ignore it, thinking it was a sporatic issue that would correct itself.

Finally, it would stall while driving on the highway, and then refused to start after that! I was on a lonely country road with my family over the holiday weekend! Serves me right for ignoring it in the first place!

At LEAST get it checked! You don't want it to go out at the worst possible moment!

When it happened to me it would first cut out badly for just a few seconds then start going again. Had to get a fuel pump replaced on the road (read expensive). The dealer said he sees this all the time. Mine died at about 80,000 miles.
