ml 320 limp home mode

Does anyone have any information on what would cause my 98 ml320 to go into the limp home mode? Twice I have driven 50-60 miles, stopped and turned off the truck, and when I restarted the truck would not shift from 2nd gear. I left it alone for an hour or so, then it ran fine. I have had it to the dealer twice and so far no luck apparantly no codes show up and it runs fine when they have it. O2 sensor was replaced a few months ago and the only thing this did was make it hard to start in cold weather.
Thanks

there is another sensor that might be bad i think it's a MAU or something like that
and it's not bad but about to die...which would indicate why you have 50/50 chance of working properly...

also might be the distributor
or wires
or plugs
(i'm not sure about the ml but my e430 has individual coils per plug)
so when one goes bad
the car goes to limp mode

Cindy
Can't remember if I contacted you off-list or not.
Range recognition switch in the shifter would be one possiblity, too many possiblities though. Almost gonna have to get the codes read in the ETC (trans control unit)

thanks for the info--I have had the car back to the dealer/repair shop 2 different times and they can't seem to find the problem. I will pass the info on to them.

I would try a different dealer if possible. They are not created equal.

Gilly,

Is the "range recognition switch" the same as the "gear identification switch"? I have the no shift other than 1st and 2nd today, and about a year ago. In both situations it happened after a kind of abrupt change from D to Reverse and then to D again. I pulled over, turned off the truck in P, then restart the engine and the problem went away on both situations.

It was going 1st and 2nd only and kind of felt like it was in Low Range mode. If it comes again I waill have the codes read.

I would say that's probably the same thing, yes.

Thanks Gilly,

I pretty much think this is the problem because I also forgot to mention that in my case, while this is happening, the LED that iluminates the "D" is off. Then when the truck come beack to work normally the "D" is iluminated again.

After seeing what it takes to change the range recognition switch, I am better off letting the dealer do it.

Probably. It's not physically demanding, but it is a bit of a puzzle and lots of patience is required.
