Check Engine Light Is On, Help Please!
 

since 2 days ago the check engine light on my ML320 2000 is on and i have been driving it like that.
my questions are: is it okay to drive it like that? what could be the problem?
i have no more warranty on it and dont know what to do? thanks :confused:

have you checked the gas cap and see if it is loose? that would be the easiest fix, if the cap is loose the light will come on. did the light coenside with a fuel purchase?

Why don't you go to Autozone or somewhere else where they hook up an OBD2 tool for free and see what code or codes show up?

Same here a couple months ago............ AutoZone scanned it & it came up O2 sensor. Went to dealer.........passenger side front O2 sensor replaced, $360.00. Good luck ;)

Getting the code from the OBD will likely provide the answer. It could be the MAF sensor. That's an easy DIY repair, but the part is expensive.

it did not come on with a fuel purchase, i had the same thing a few months ago when i had warranty on it and they replaced the O2 sensor, i just tried the gas cap and its tite,
so i guess i have to go to autozone .

If you can't figure it out, you can always disconnect the battery and re-connect it, that may reset the light.

Just remember that you will need the radio code handy so that you can use your radio once you reconnected the battery.

Believe it or not, I have saved myself many trips to the dealer for lights that just go on, sometimes without real reason.

If it continues to come on, then you should definately go and get it checked out.

before i disconnect the battery, how do i make it work again with the radio code? i mean how do i enter the code? thanks

The MCS screen will prompt you for the radio code. Enter the numbers via the touch pad and then push enter. ;)

Disconnecting the Battery
 

Once you re-connect the battery the radio will not work until you enter the code.

You simply enter the radio code and then everything works again.

If you do not have the code, ask your local dealer to look it up via your vin number.

i took the car to a mechanic who was good, he replaced the MAF sensor, the O2 sensor and the door actuator and i feel better now. thanks again

What were your prices for the parts & the labor?
Did you use aftermarket MAF & O2 sensors?
What is a door actuator?

The same thing happened to me about a year ago. At first I thought it was the gas cap, then I suspected the O2 sensor, but the dealer traced it to the mass airflow sensor. They replaced it and the problem has been gone ever since.
