98 ml320 gear shift probem

please help, 98 ml320 gear shift is not operating correctly. Gear shift lever moves freely and does not require brake pedal to be pushed in order to move lever. Gear shifter moves freely without keys in ignition. Is this a simple fix I can do myself. Hopefully it is just a part I can just replace.
