Creaking rear struts

Seems quit a few MLs have creaking rear struts, including mine.
Any easy fixes, other than outright replacement? A neighbor had creaky struts, changed them out, still creaked, but then quite a while later, the creak went away all by itself.

This doesn't answer your question directly but in our '98 ML the struts were replaced and we sold the vehicle before there was enough time on them to see how long they lasted. On our '00 they were replaced also and the replacement set have creaked and groaned for a long time. It is not supposed to be a safety issue. The dealer has stated that the second pair creaking is noted in my service records and if the creaking manifests itself where the dealer can hear and verify it, they will be replaced. The only solution I have been given is to replace them.

I too have creaking rear struts on my 99 ML 430. My truck only has 57k on it, and the problem has been around for a few thousand miles. The dealer wanted $1100 to replace the struts, and I said no, I would do it myself (they already got me on a few other things that trip, so I thought I had paid them enough). But, I am still confused as to what in the strut can be making the noise? I would think it was a bushing or mounting point, not the actual strut. Anyone ever change out their rear struts that can give me some tips on how to do it? Also, anyone know a good place to order the new shocks/struts from?

Check out the search function. You'll find sufficient reading material related to changing rear struts to keep you busy for a good while.

Bought a pair of genuine mercedes struts (They have the logo and part number) for 330 delivered on eBay. Won't put them in for a few weeks, but we'll see how they are, eh?
