Trailer light harness

I posted this on the tech thread but you guys probably could help me better
have any of you installed a wire harness for a trailer on your ML`s and where and how. Thanks for any help.

The factory harness that is included with the hitch comes with instuctions, is easy to install and works great.

Thanks

Is the harness available all by itself?

waybomb 04-06-2005 06:36 PM

Went to the dealer today and asked about the harness - only available with a fcatory hitch, at $290.00, no receiver or ball included.
There has to be a better way.

I damaged the socket which is part of the harness and the dealer ordered the part to replace it. The socket is the part that is mounted in the metal holder that you plug the large round connector into.

I think each of the parts of the harness have part number. If that's the case I would think they could be ordered separately. Maybe the part I damaged is not considered the harness.

Edited:

Each of the connectors have separate part numbers. Connectors can be ordered, at least I've always been able to in the past. If you could order the connectors you could make a harness. I think that would be quite a pain, but it could be done.

Just a matter of finding a smart helpful partsman. I'm sure you can order it.

Well I can let you know in a few days....

I have ordered the Draw-Tite Modulite 18187 and the modulite wiring kit. I'm planning on following some wiring directions I found on another forum and set my wiring kit to "plug" into the receptor found in the rear compartment behind the LH removable panel.

In checking out my "new" ML, I noticed there is a spot in the fuse/realy box for a trailer light relay, but no relay.
So, if a harness is hooked up, stock, or otherwise, does a relay need to be installed?

waybomb 04-06-2005 11:20 PM

I'd like to know how it comes out. I found this site, which has a lot of info on hitches, amongst many other things..

After reading all of this, I think I'm going to throw my money at the MB parts department, but I'll wait to see how your DrawTite Modulite comes out.

I went to etrailers.com got a om hitch for 112.00 got the wire harness at the dealer for 60.00 installed it myself. easy as pie.

waybomb 04-09-2005 02:21 PM

Do you have a part number for the harness? The dealer says the only way i can get it is with the $298 hitch.

JordyR 04-15-2005 11:09 PM

I threw the plastic bag away but I`ll call and get the part number for ya its a two part. wire harness splice and the pigtail that plugs into it.

Fred, some part numbers for the wiring harness and installation instructions are on this page:
