'99 ML 430 new battery install & BAS/ESP light
51,000 miles. Orig battery died REALLY suddenly and REALLY dead - would not crank even jumped from towtruck. Took dead battery out, had it checked at Kragen (parts store). Bought new replacement battery, drove back to ML430, and installed. (Car was without battery for maybe 1 hour.) Car now starts as usual, but BAS/ESP warning light is now on (and stays on) and once I press gas pedal the motor keeps searching for an idle speed. Also gas pedal seems ineffective. I could idle the car to a dealership, on surface streets. Owners Manual is missing, so I'm at a loss re the meaning of this warning light. My guess is that something(s) need to be reset after having been without power??

For those interested - carson 356's solution (worked like a charm!!) is this: 1.) turn on engine and rotate steering wheel lock-to-lock several times; 2.) turn ignition OFF; 3.) turn ignition to ACCESSORY (engine OFF); 4.) wait 5 minutes; 5.) start engine. I did all of the above ONE time and ML430 runs like it should. (I thought I should leave a follow up here since I posted at 2 areas - and I noticed plenty of viewing)

What to do to reset things after dead/removed battery is included in owners manual.

If you don't have a scanner..Launch or SDS, try leaving engine running for 20 minutes at idle and then turn engine off. Restart and check throttle action. I did get one to relearn by just turning on ignition, and off again after 1 minute. ESP/BAS likely needs Steering Angle Relearn procedure...turn steering lock to lock with engine at idle, turn off ignition and restart after 10 minutes. . |
