99 430 door panel removal

Ok, this is going to sound basic, but how in the world to you remove the interior door panels on a 99 ML430? (both front and rear) There are no screws that I can see, nor obvious clips. I would assume it is a situation where you need to give it a bit of a whack from the bottom upwards, but with the door mounted airbags in the front I wanted to ask around before I go blindly jaring the panels.

removing door panel

I'm sure others have posted instructions before which you could find using the search feature (for future reference)

It's easy, there are 2 screws hidden behind the door pull. YOu have to pull or pry off the fake wood trim from the inside door panel which pulls straight out. I use a small screwdriver with tape on it to pry the bottom of the plastic piece enough for me to grip it. unscrew 2 screws. Then using the screwdriver again I will pry the bottom of the door panel up enough to get a grip. Just where the panel and the metal meet at the bottom of the open door. once you get a grip you can just pull the panel straight off from the bottom and sides. The top actually hangs on metal door frame and can be lifted upwards after the bottom and sides are free. Careful when you pull the panel away as the door handle is still attached to the panel by a cable which depending on what you want to do, can remain or be removed. To remove the cable, follow the black cable to where it attaches to the door panel. Where the hook is you will be able to slide back the plastic sleeve which allows you to twist the hook free.
When you reinstall make sure you replace any broken clips and reattach the cable for the door handle. hang the top of the panel in the groove by the window then line up the clips and give the panel a good thump with your fist at each clip.
These days I actually don't even bother with the screw driver and just pull everything out by hand. Takes 2 minutes at most.

NOTE: Before you begin, goto the dealer and buy a few of the door panel plastic clips that hold the panel on. They are cheap and often you'll break a few when pulling it off. They also have a special tool at mercedes for "releasing" the clips and using that is also optional.

Like I said above, I'm sure if you do a search you'll find illustrated instructions for this. YOu might also search door speakers which will have the same need.

Never mind the search... Here http://www.benzworld.org/publications/pub.asp?id=82
