Window track/door problem

My drivers window is coming out of the door with a thick light-brown glue-like substance on the outside of the window. I cleaned it off and the window came up with some more on it. Does anyone know what this might be? I'm thinking some kind of window track has fallen off and the glue is getting on the window.

Any tips on removing the door interior to get inside and see?

Thanks.

I can tell you exactly what it is. Inside the doors MB put some "sound deadening" material. Basically, they stuck a few small (1 foot by 6 inches) pieces of tar paper with this nasty brown goo on it inside the doors. After a few years, they start to curl, and once they curl enough, they touch the window glass. That is where the goo is coming from. To fix it, pull of the interior door panel, and pull out the tar paper sheet. If you want to replace the sound deadening, use something like Dynamat which you can get at a car stereo store. It works (and sticks) much better.

To get the stuff off you glass, here is how I did it. I scrapped off as much as I could with a razor blade. It will leave some behind. I then cleaned it with a solvent (I used brake cleaner, but you can also use nail polish remover, just try not to get it on the Paint!!!). A small amount of residue wil probably remain. I used fine steel wool to buff it off. Get the remaining fingerprints off with windex, and you are good as new.

Perfect timing - with the hot weather this summer this is happening to my rear window... ugh.

tks for the tip.

ML320guy,
I've just read your post in this forum.
It seems you have the answers I need.
I tried pulling the middle A/C unit out of my '99 ML320.
I have the right side out about an inch. Can't budge the left side and it won't go back in, either! It's cattywhompus and is hitting on something.

Do I have to take out the radio? What does the removal key look like - and what do I query on ebay to see what one looks like? I, too, can make one to use if I know what it looks like?

Would appreciate your help.
Thanks,

No success yet.

ML320guy, No success, yet, but in prying, pulling, tugging, etc., I've finally seen the thingy that sticks up into the middle vent. It appears as a metal pointed prong or arrow head, in about 3" behind the louvers. It is very difficult to see inside the A/C vent behind the louvers. I don't know yet what kind of tool to use to press it downward to pop it out, but will try today starting with screw drivers and the like. Boy, have I butchered this thing - wonder what a replacement is going to cost me??? Removing the radio has not helped one bit because of the existing metal box surrounding the radio that keeps one from accessing the A/C unit.

How did this thread get hijacked?

Anyway, the sound deadening panels are a real problem in hot-weather states. Eventually, the other panels will suffer the same fate, including the sound deadener between the headliner...look for the same goo when you close the moonroof... :(
