Lifter noise

Just wondering if anyone has had their lifters replaced and ,if so, how much did it cost?

This morning on startup the lifter noise was pretty pronounced; it was 48 degrees in the Atlanta area this a.m. I know as the temperature drops, its going to be getting louder and louder. After about five minutes as the engine warms the noise goes away altogether.

I've already run engine flush through with an oil change, so I think its probably wear and not just a blockage.

Lastly is this a possible DIY job and are there any special tools required ?

Mine just started to do this early this year with 68,000 miles. My dealer told me this is normal. Don't forget us early ML owners have a ten year, 150,000 mile engine warranty against engine wear due to the dino oil lawsuit. ;)

Azin:
What 10 year/150k mile warranty? I have an early production 99 ml430 (produced in 98) does this apply to me? What is the "dino" suit?

I bought my truck as a starmark car, and the dealer never told me anything about this.

The letter that I have dated September, 2002, refers to a class action lawsuit over oil sludge problems with early ML's due to the use of conventional oil AKA dino oil. It states that they will cover the vehicle up to ten years from the date of first puchase or 150,000 miles in the unlikely event any future oil sludging or related engine damage in your vehicle from the earlier use of conventional, approved motor oil (API SH or SJ).
