Heat Issues
Now that it's getting cold in New England a heat problem in my 2002 ML500 has appeared. When car is cold (below 50 degrees) there is no heat and the lights on the heater controls blink randomly. Overiding the "auto" setting is impossible as it will always return to "auto" in a few seconds. Finally there is a random clicking in the dash right of center which I assume is one of the servos not doing its job. All this continues for maybe 15 minutes. Then the heat kicks in and will be fine until the car is dead cold again. Problem seems to be getting worse and it seems likely I'll have no heat at all soon. Car is at 29K and nearing end of warranty (I think. I am 2nd owner) and due for a dealer service in a week or so. I just would like a heads up if possible as to what may be going on here before I have to deal "negotiate" Thanks for any thoughts.

You most likely have a broken stepper motor or linkage on the heater box.
The flashing light is an indication of a failure in the control system. I would take it to your dealer soon for diagnosis. Regards, Dr.D

Thanks, Doc. It failed completely last night after I posted my query. Good news is that it failed with the heat on. Appointment's been made for first thing next week. Thanks again.
