Sachs vs. Bilsteins for ML 430
I am about to replace my rear shocks on a 2000 ML 430. The rear shocks "squeak" and "creak" alot, which I know is common on this model. I was going to purchase the Sachs until the parts guy said that is what was already on the ML. The other option was Bilsteins, which were much more expensive, although price is not my main concern. Can anyone provide input on the Sachs shocks? I don't want squeaks and creaks again.

If you are going to replace both shock and spring (recommended), I would go with the Sachs. Replaced mine about six months ago; much better ride plus no squeak/creaking. These come as a unit.
If you want to replace shock only, I would go with the Bilstein. The Bilstein is the better of the two. I put the Bilsteins on the front of my ML, very nice combination with the new rear Sachs assemblies. If money is no object......new bilsteins all around with new springs in rear. Cost and labor wil be higher........Just my opinion...... |
Thanks Springfever. The Sachs were sold as the shock only (only $46 each) as well as the Bilsteins ($157 each). What would the difference be if I used the old spring with the new Sachs shock, as opposed to a complete Sachs shock assembly?

As long as the spring is still in good shape, no problem with just replacing the shock. This is going to be a one-time expense (more than likely) so I would probably opt for the more expensive Bilsteins. You might call around and see if you can find a better price than the $157.00 you quoted...boy, that sounds high !
How many miles do you have on your ML ? If less than 100K, definately shocks only. More than that and the springs are probably sagging a little and replacement will help with the ride. My ML had 225K when I changed mine out and some of us hit a particularly good deal on the Sachs combo.Whatever you decide as far as parts, consider doing the labor yourself. That's at least equal to the cost of parts. Plenty of advice on this site and others regarding the swap. Good luck !! If the fronts are still original why don't you change them out with the Bilsteins..about 100 bucks each and go from there. You really should consider doing both axles.... |
As an afterthought.........Most likely the squeaking and creaking is not actually caused by the shock itself. You might consider having a knowledgeable MB mechanic check out the entire suspension for something that might be causing the noises. I've seen quite a few posts regarding lubrication of various suspension parts to correct this..
Might save you a few bucks !! |
Tried the lubrication route and no luck. I wonder that it is the design of the shock. If the Sachs is OEM, then I guess it is safe to assume the replacement will eventually squeak as well. I may spin off and start another thread inquiring on the squeak being linked to a specific type of shock.
