98 ml320 oil pan needs resealing

I have appx 132,000 oem miles, and oil is leaking from between the upper and lower pans. Is this leak considered normal for the age and mileage of the vehicle? What is the appx time/cost to repair, since I don't intend to do this myself? Thanks.

Richard,

Oil pan leaks are not common on this engine. Are you sure of the source? On my engine, the small plate on the front of the engine, driver's side, leaked pretty bad. The oil would drip off the AC compressor, with the engine running but car stationary, but would blow back along the pan rails if the vehicle was moving.

Another leak point is the cover on the oil filter cannister. Look for a build up of dirt and oil on the cannister.

I would attach a picture of the cover plate but the forum thinks it is too big. Picassa says it is 35K and the forum thinks it is 92K. I could email it to you if interested.

Regards

Don't forget the o-ring for the oil quality sensor that always weeps and
tricks techs into thinking the main pan is leaking.

Leakage Between Oil Level Sensor and Oil Pan
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of oil leakage between the oil level sensor and the oil pan, the cause maybe due to the sealing ring being damaged by the burr at the oil pan installation hole. To resolve, remove and replace only the sealing ring as per the parts information listed below. Lightly oil the sealing ring prior to installation.
Inspect the surface of the oil pan oil level sensor installation hole. If extreme roughness or sharp edges are found, de-bur the rough surface of the oil pan hole with an emery cloth.

Think the dealer is expensive? Do you know how much it costs to train a dealer tech? Or buy the required MB special tools to have on hand?

Thanks to all. Now I know what I'll be doing once the weather warms up.
