I recently purchased the aforementioned ML with 35k miles. The car is in excellent condition, and it's been a joy to drive. My only concern is a slight shudder that occurs when the power is applied as the steering wheel nears opposite lock.
I took it to the local Mercedes dealership, Regal Mercedes, in Huntsville, AL, to have it checked out. They kept it for a day and drove it. Afterwards, they told me that there was no problem at all. It was merely the consequence of a tight turning radius on an AWD vehicle. As an engineer I can understand the concept, and I have noticed it in the past when I've gone "mudding" with friends of mine in their old CJ5 Jeeps. My problem is that I don?t remember noticing this on another ML that I had driven a couple of weeks earlier. Am I just paranoid, or is this something that needs to be investigated further? Any help, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated? Marshall McBride |
This is a problem on some of the earlier cars. The transfer case had a 50%/50% front to rear torque split. Results are shudder of steering at lock. ON EXTREME cases we installed the newer 45%/55% fr to rear transfer case!! Good luck on getting replacement. Trucks made after Nov 1998 "should" have the later case.
