ML 320 Fuel low light, Windshield Washer Tank

Problem 1: I had a post some time ago about a fuel pump gone bad. At that time I noticed the fuel gauge showed 1/2 tank, but the Low Fuel Light was on. I deduced from that the fuel pump was not delivering fuel. Was I wrong? Since the installation of a new fuel pump, the fuel low light still comes on and stays on until the engine starts. Is this proper? Thanks!

Problem 2: I ran low on windshield washer fluid. I had a gallon of such in the garage and filled the tank. No problem. I did notice the cap to the tank was broken off but was still on the tank. After filling the tank, I forgot to replace the cap. Washers worked fine for a short time then stopped working. I thought the tank leaked as there was not a drop of fluid in the tank. I poured some water (approx 1 qt. (maybe liter)) to check the system. Found no leaks so I replaced the cap. Used the washer with just water in it to see if it would last. The washers worked fine with no extra loss of water. Added some washer fluid, replaced the cap and it seems to be working fine. Does the absence of the cap cause that much loss of fluid? I lost most of a gallon of fluid in less than a week. Sounds fishy to me. Any one have an experience like this? Thanks!
