'99 ML430 OB2 code P0442 fails smog

I know this code means 'small leak in evap system'. The SUV was taken to be smog tested, but failed due to their computer reading this code, and it is due for 60,000-mile service. Is there a way to reset the Check Engine Light and erase the reading, and then allow the Drive Cycle (is it 40 starts?) to occur, so I can then take it back (IF the Check Engine Light STAYS OFF) and possibly PASS a retest? Or should I just suckit up and let my wife take it to the DEALER (OH NO-O-O-! My Poor Wallet!!) for its full-on 60k service? I have yet to find an independent locally in Mesa, Az. area.
If some of this should involve temp batery disconnect, I'm not sure we have the Radio Code, but I guess I could deal with that too.
Thank you!!!

There are at least 4 COMMON part failures that could cause that problem..OR the gas cap seal may not be doing it's job. Or the gas cap may be loose..

A dealer or shop that has SDS laptop can activate that "evap" system & check for the problem..
