Hill Descent Control at highway speeds?

Just discovered a hidden/unknown function my ML430 performs. While traveling with cruise control engaged I began a descent down a long steep grade, as I began to pick up speed the ML downshifted once then twice (from Drive to gear 3) and then applied the brakes to bring the ML back to the speed I set with the cruise control.
I know the ML has Hill Descent Control but I did not know it was available at highway speeds. Has anyone else noticed this feature?

When my trans was working, it did that. Same for the C280's trans.
Looking for a deal on a replacement trans and TC for my ML.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. I first noticed that when coming back from a ski trip. I've not seen it fail to keep the ML within ~ 5 mph of the speed specified for the cruse control.
