ML 320 body/chassis squeeks
 

Hi Group,

This has become very annoying, from being proud to drive my 98 ML320, to being almost embarrassed. Almost two years ago when I purchased same the squeeks came from the rear underside. Sounded like a bad childhood bed. During my first oil change, the domestic car mechanic stated he looked for the squeek but couldn't find anything.
Just recently it started sounding like a couple of twins jumping on their beds in competition. Squeeks coming from the fron and rear.
Has anyone had this before and what is the solution? I've looked at other threads and I didn't read anything about ML's body noises. It doesn't appear to have any strut leaks and ball joint or linkage problems.

Hey, I just had all of those noises fixed. The sound of creaking became almost normal after a while. But my dad couldn't stand it. Well, after talking to my trusty mechanic, he mentioned that he has other ML's that make the woise as well. He said that the solution to the problem is to remove the torsion bars, lube all of the bushings and fittings, and replace and torque to spec in proper sequence. I had him do this, and presto no more creakes when going over bumps or braking. It is now a silent stalker.... ;)

How hard to do?
 

Hey, Justin. How hard would that have been for you to do? I can't remember if you work on your cars yourself or not. I've noticed a bit of this on one of my cars.

It does not sound too complicated :rolleyes: , but then I'm a salesman. Nothing sounds complicated to us salesmen. Of course, most of the time the real "work" is being done by somebody else.

We pulled up right as he was torquing the last bolt. He was using some special socket thingy. He also had some documents from MB out showing the proper sequence for tightening bolts.


I think it would be easy to do if you had the proper sequence, and the special socket thingy. And I do try to work on my own cars. But sometimes I just dont have the tool or the time to work on it, hence the need for my mechanic.

Rear Seats
 

Sometimes I hear a very annoying squeaking sound coming from the back, I discovered the problem it was the rear seats, they were not properly seated. If you play around with it the sound might go away. It happened to me several times, it sounded as if I was driving a 1980's van! My ML has 30/30/30 seats and can be lifted forwarded to allow access to the trunk area where I have third row seats.

Another time, a similar sound was coming from the front, the brake pads were the culprit!

HEY CAN YOU DO THIS YOUR SELF? AND WHAT KIND OF LUBE DID YOU USE?

Yes, you can do it yourself. I am unsure of the lube that he was using, but it was something in a grey tube. I do know it is every possible to do it yourself, however there are a few things needed, such as the special socket, and the directions showing the proper direction onwhich bolts get torqued first.
