ETS Light

Okay. I looked for this issue already but can't really understand what MY situation fits.

My 1998 ML just had the ETS yellow light on the far left come on. What does that mean and how do I fix it?

Thanks.

ETS=electronic traction system. If the MIL lamp is on the traction system is OFF.

You will need to have codes read from the system.

Do the brake lamps work?

The lights seem to work. They light up when I brake.

What do you think it is?

Still looking for some help. Hate MB dealers.

I am no genuis, however, one may want to look at the wheel speed sensors and the wiring thereof. Why? because I BELIEVE that each sensors constantly computes each wheel speed and if one slips or looses traction could activate the ETS so if there is a faulty sensor or short on a wire the computer couls be getting false readings. Another slight POSSIBILITY might be to get sensor spray to clean them becuase you say that the ETS light activates when you brake and perhaps brake dust interferring with an already dirty sensor or when you brake the suspension dips and rubs on an exposed wire which has lost its insulation from rubbing over time.

You may want to do as search on this forum section not just ETS but also on abs etc

Have you had any wheel or brake work done recently?
The wheel tone rings can get damaged and the sensor heads pick up metalic dust and fail to read correctly, although this is usually accompanied with a pedal reaction at low speeds.

The system will default to non active mode if a fault of any type is tripped.
The tires also need to be within a few percent of each other and a worn tread will trip the system at high speeds. Serious under inflation will do the same.

It seems you need to get the system scanned, and then you will know what part of the system the ECU thinks is bad.

The way I understand your post is that the ETS flashes does not stay on

Now my Check Engine Light is ON!

Is this possibly related?

Also, none of those other links posted worked!

I am going tomorrow to get the code read. Will post back with details.
