SUV Fuel Gage is stuck-help!

After putting $60 worth of gas in my mb SUV, I noticed the gage still read 1/4 tank so I went back and tried to fill it up again-it took $2 only. Net: the tank was in fact, full but the gage didn't change. Am out of work currently and don't need a $200 visit to the shop for this. Any quick fixes I can try? They have to be simple-don't know anything about cars. Fortunately with my mercedes, I usually don't have to. Help? Thanks-Katie
