Panic Acceleration Mode??

We have a 2001 ML 320 with 75K. When the gas pedal is pressed rapidly (almost like a panic stop on a brake pedal) the car shuts down to a limp (not over 1500 rpm) mode. It's happened to me once and just happened to my wife.

Is this built in to the programming? when the car is shut down and restarted it operates just fine. Thinking its some kind of protection if someone confuses the gas with the brake, yet I see no mention of it.

Thanks!

John

M112? It happened to me with my M113 (sister to the M112). It is supposedly not all that uncommon. Apparently, the engine ECU gets confused easily; and a hard press on the fly-by-wire unit will do this.

Unless this is happening frequently, I would ignore it. You can try changing the fly-by-wire unit ($$) or the engine ECU ($$$$$); but I, personally, wouldn't worry about it.

What say you MB DOC?

Got a code

The scanner I have says its a pedal position sensor. Should be covered under the extended warranty!

Thanks.

It Gets More Interesting

So this morning I took it to the dealer I bought it from (Used, and I wanted to use the extended warranty). When I started it the ETS and BAS/ESP lights were on as well as the check engine light. Left it on while they read the codes. They called me and said there were too many to diagnose so they reset everything and waited for the check engine light to come on, so of course it never did. The problem is gone (for now) and I paid 148.00 for diagnostics that did nothing I could not have done with my home OBD. Nice.

So I'll just ignore it for now!

Thanks for the info.

John
